Books about Spears
#1
Are there any books or other sources that go in depth on the history and usage of spears in the ancient world?

There are a couple of books on Anglo-Saxon spear types by Swanton - both quite old but 2nd hand copies don't seem to be too expensive:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spearheads-Anglo...224&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anglo-Saxon-Spea...035&sr=1-9

Otherwise, I am not aware of any other monographs devoted exclusively to spears & the like pre-1000AD.

We (Pen & Sword) have a book coming out in November called A Storm of Spears which is about the mechanics of hoplite warfare and goes into great detail about properties and use of the spear. It uses detailed examination of ancient literary, visual and archaeological data, supported by scientific testing and experience of reenactors using different grips, stances etc.

Not quite what you were after, but sure to have some information of interest to you.

Sophocles "Storm of spears" metaphor is so vivid, I latched onto it as well in an article I just wrote on the mechanics of hoplite combat. Who's writing your book?

A Spartan, being asked a question, answered "No." And when the questioner said, "You lie," the Spartan said, "You see, then, that it is stupid of you to ask questions to which you already know the answer!"
