A careless remark, sir - NO they should not!

And if it has to be done, only under control of the county archaeologist and to a plan and a system. If it is a site of known archaeological interest it should be Scheduled anyway. (Not that it stops people!)

There is enough damage done in this country by detectorists as it is thank you very much and this site has already suffered enough from archaeological vandalism.
Moi Watson

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Merlot in one hand, Cigar in the other; body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride!

Careful now. My wife's uncle Fred owns that field and he's likely to set the goats on metal detectors.

Does make me wonder if they've eaten any remaining evidence though.

cheers

Authun, you asked about the Castleshaw Vicus - there is some information in Roman Saddleworth by Ken Booth. The publication has no date

Other than the '© Kenneth Booth 2001' on the imprint page!

OOps - blind as a bat! Big Grin

The fort (Castleshaw) benefitted a lot from the MSC programme in the 1980s. Before then, it was a bunch of lumps and bumps left from previous antiquarian digs so visitors hadn't a clue what it all meant! And yes, Norman is a very nice chap Big Grin
