The Pilums of Mars
#16
Narukami is correct about Martian-Asian contacts.

The 1986 More Adventures of Samurai Cat. documents Japan-Barsoom contacts. I am trying to locate a copy. The name Barsoom is specifically used, and the chapter is called "A Fighting Cat of Mars."

Right you are Gaius!

My wife has a copy of that book (and most of the Samurai Cat series) and indeed Tomokato does confront the Martians (along with a lot of other Hollywood and Literary icons). This is probably why the series has never been made into a film -- the rights clearances would be legion and no doubt cost a fortune.

I read that they are developing 2D glasses now.. Not kidding! It's for people who are dragged into 3D movies but always leave with a headache.

The new film John Carter will also look pretty familiar too, what with Atia of the Julii, Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, the commander of the Ninth Legion, a veteran of the Ninth Legion and Jesus Christ all in the cast!

And isn't it supremely ironic that you see "Martians" carrying weighted pila in movies but never Roman soldier characters?

Right now on the Roman Military History and Archaeology forum there's a thread discussing a "Martian Legion." Even Cicero referred to them!

Both Traci Lords and the Legio Martia have the XXX symbology in common. This can hardly be a coincidence.

Well then, I guess that finally settles, once and for all, the disappearance of the Ninth Legion.

The Ninth was not destroyed north of Hadrian's Wall, nor were they transfered to the Eastern Provinces. They were in fact recalled to Mars to put down a rebellion along the Victory Canal on the slopes of Nix Olympica.

And we thought Roman legionaries in ancient China was far fetched ...

I really look forward to the John Carter film.

As a kid I read all the ERB books detailing his adventures. OK - the way he gets to Mars could use a little work - but that aside there was a good idea there to be developed. I hope they can magnify the adventure and tidy up some of the sc-fi inconsistencies that a modern audience might laugh at. And I really look forward to seeing Tars Tarkas!!! Big Grin

Well since pilUM is male, i would not know why pilA would be ok too, unless it is an a-sexual word, then it might be ok in Latin.

Pilum is neutral. Plural is pila.

It was a deliberate misusage to keep in the style of the series titles.

Took long enough for you guys to rise to the bait.
