I concur also, Horses back teeth as a brake = utterley irresponsible and inhumane, as is tiring the mounts out so that they can then be ridden by the back teeth... i've seen that from a few groups who claim to be highly competent at historical riding...

I have to say, as I watched the march in chester recently, I was very impressed, and even moreso when I was told that the leading group had only been in existence for a few weeks, they put on an excellent show and I would most definitely like to see them again!
I know it's an odd first post, but I've been lurking about reading things, and this other group (Comitatus) I once saw and I have to say I was appalled at one person's riding techniques, the horses were not enjoying themselves and looked very uncomfortable, and I was surprised the poor horse didn't throw him off it's back!!
I can't recall the name of this new group, but they were very impressive, well done on them!

David, it's probably not the better idea to criticize anybody's effort in public. You won't win many friends like that. Praise and congratulations are always welcome, though.

Why do you folks think it's necessary to backstab and criticize in the first place? There are many ways to express opinions, and it is NOT needful to be unpleasant about it. Please read the rules of posting (found in the link below my signature) and post messages according to the rules.

Calm down Olga. Sometimes it is a case of not what you say but how you say it.
The criticism is probably true. Even the best group can have an inexperienced member who has not yet reached the standard of the rest of the group he is part of.
My own group has won the award for best military re-enactment group in the past and we pride ourselves on sharp and well executed drill. However, we do have new members from time to time and even though we do not allow them to participate in public drill displays until they have undertaken two training sessions, it does take most people a while to fit seamlessly into the display group. I am sure that that applies doubly for mounted re-enactors.

Sorry, I didn't realise there was bitterness between some people here, I was just doing as I was brought up to do, to say what I see!
I do have to say that I was just an observer from the audience, I didn't like what I saw with this one guy and the way he was treating the horse, the poor thing didn't know what to do and looked so uncomfortable, the rest were fine from what I could see, which is testament to their riders and trainer(s), but that one guy, nope, I don't think he was as good as the rest of them.
Sorry if I've offended anyone, but, think of it as feedback from the general public!
