About Vindolanda.

I like all of Roman history. However, I have always had a special interest in the fort of Vindolanda. I have visited their site, but would like to ask a question: are there any good books out there on the subject. It seems that on their site they have good books, but don't seem geared toward the general reader. Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of short reviews of Anthony Birley's book about Vindolanda here:
I haven't read it myself, but maybe some who have would like to comment on it. I own a book called 'Life and Letters on the Roman Frontier' by Alan K. Bowman which is also about the Vindolanda tablets. It isn't what I'd call an exciting read, but it has (for me) useful information.
I bought both books recently and would rate them both quite highly. I also have Robin Birley's 'Vindolanda: A Roman Frontier Outpost on Hadrian's Wall' which, although now very out of date owing to the number of discoveries at Vindolanda since it was published, is still a good read. I suspect that it has long been out of print however, being only two years younger than 'The Armour of Imperial Rome' by a certain H.R. Robinson.
