CHESTER ROMAN FESTIVAL
#46
An amazing event for myself and my group. The main parade through the town was something special, marching to the sound of the trumpets and singing 'kras a net' (I think that is how you spell it) was an amazing experience (that destroyed our optio and centurio's voices) and was rightly described by our optio as sensory overload. Somethng similar to go for the arena display. I have to say though that I am amazed that our block' display went so smoothly considering that our block consisted of no less than 4 different groups including a polish group and a reasonably large number of complete newbies.

Bit of a shame too that the site didnt lend itself to an artillery range either.

It was around 90 legionaries Smile I've counted the rows when we were marching three abreast - 30 rows, some incomplete. So between 80 and 90. Probably 20-30 auxils, the rest was barbarian scu.. the rest was the noble Britons and some Romans from the far future Smile

Salve Piotr,

In fact there were 168 soldiers in the parade on Saturday and 157 on Sunday (I had to do the count for H&S). Aapart from the 1st/2nd Cent soldiers at the front there were also a mix of 4th Cent soldiers at the rear of the parade. Those numbers to not include native Britons who made up another 17 on the Saturday and Sunday.

Vale,

Nerva.

By "soldiers" do you mean legionaries, or legionaries and auxils?

What's the difference - would auxilia not count as 'soldiers'? Wink

David and I are from Leeds. The group has members from London to the Western Isles. Now we just needs to fill in the gaps!

Loved seeing those photos of all the groups making that testudo. Pretty amazing, but oh, didn't some of those shield colours clash

They would. But I never said I've counted 90 soldiers. I said I've counted around 90 legionaries. I'd be very surprised if there were really twice that number.

Brilliant event! Good too, to see so many familiar faces again, as well as making the acquaintance of a few new ones, in particular Piotr, Claire and Ben.
I notice that in two of the three photos on page two of the thread which show me I am making adjustments to my helmet - am I really that obsessive?

"singing 'kras a net' (I think that is how you spell it)"

I think you may mean: 'Cras amet qui numquam amavit, quique amavit cras amet'

"oh, didn't some of those shield colours clash"

I wonder - just whose shields might you be referring to Lawrence?

I notice Britannia's shields have become quite varied as well by the way.

Do you have all the words for that 'kras a net' marching song? I kind of got it as we were marching but I wasn't sure.

Indeed.
There's the usual Yellow oval with red design (admittedly a little beaten up, but they do get well used).
Then there's the newer oval painted in Britannia colours but with a Chi-Rho design.
There's one with the Britannia colours reversed, which will be the new shield design for Valentia (essentially Britannia North).
Finally there's the smaller Saggitarii one, which Blayn's holding upside down, not sure why.

Variety is the spice of life Wink
