Major Greek/Hellenistic Event in the UK – 2012

Major Greek/Hellenistic Event in Bedford, UK – 2012 21st - 22nd July 2012.

The organisers have asked me to advertise this event on RAT, and try and generate interest amongst Greek re-enactors.

The Bedford River Festival is held biannually in Bedford, England, on the banks of the River Great Ouse. It was founded in 1978 to celebrate the completion of a navigable route, by water, between Bedford and the coast. It is the main tourist-attracting event in the town and the second largest free outdoor event in the UK. Over 350,000 visitors attended the 2010 event.

It has several events and attractions over the two days, usually including bands on the main stage, 2 community stages and acoustic stage, a road parade, boat shows/races, a raft race for local teams and a firework display. Along with the normal attractions of the fun fair, the River Festival also hosted the sports village, where local sports clubs could come and demonstrate their wares. In 2012 the event will be strongly linked to the Olympic Games and all things Greek.

The 'authentic area' is right next to the arena, with grass and a few trees, with a small area for the horses. The main re-enactment groups in the UK are invited, and I have been asked to provide a couple of Greek cavalrymen, costs permitting! I’ll try and tempt suitably dressed Comitatus members along. Traders and demonstrators have been invited, including a potter and a bronze caster. The larger the authentic campsite, the better. But a hall is available for re-enactors to use as a base and for sleeping, with an area for modern plastic tents.

It would be great to have as many foreign re-enactors there as possible. It would be great to aim for a major gathering of Greek and Hellenistic re-enactors. Hopefully a second Greek/Hellenistic event will be arranged for the weekend before/after the festival, to make the journey worthwhile. Two major events on successive weekends would be a great experience.

Please feel free to register an interest.
