Vexillum Pictures?
#1
Salvete Omnes!

Would anybody have some good photographs of the 'victory' vexillum found in Egypt and now in the Moscow museum?

If memory serves, this is the only vex banner that has survived. Right?

No others are known. Of course, no one can be absolutely sure that the one pictured was actually a vexillum either. It just seems to be the most likely identification for it, based on the size. The gamma shapes in all four corners also tell us that it is probably more or less complete so we can be fairly sure that it cannot have changed much in size. However, there always remains the possibility that it could have been something other than a vexillum which just happened to be about the same size as one.

The top edge of it is hemmed and a piece of reed of the same length as the width of the linen passes through the hem. Whatever it was it was apparently meant to hang from its top edge; so either a banner or perhaps a curtain (?).

Does anyone have an idea what kind of paint was used on this? Oil paint? Casein? Wax? :-)
