I don't know for sure, but what I do know is that I like to wear some piece of cloth around my neck when I am wearing my armour, be it a squamata or a hamata.

There's no sign of anyone wearing one in the Vergilius Romanus, but some of the hunters in the Apamea 'Great Hunt' mosaic are wearing white focali...which is late 4th/early 5th I think?
