RAT York is over, sadly
#1
I'd like to offer a great big thanks to John and Amy of Comitatus for their organising of the RAT Conference this year. Thanks too to all the excellent speakers, who gave us real insight into topics ranging from Late Roman armies to Nijmegen cavalry masks to Hadrian's Wall. Everything went off very well, I think, and the highlight without question was to meet lots of faces from the forum. Thanks to everyone who came, and hope to see you all, plus lots of the rest of you next year!

Seconded. All in all, an excellent experience.

And luckily, John and Amy hadn't booked the Kings Arms as the venue:

It's good to hear you have enjoyed it. I am beyond tired but it was certainly worth it.

We had around 20 people a day, and it was a cosy environment.
Meeting RATers and puting names to faces, listening to great talks and having everything working without a hitch were the highlights for me!

When's the next one.... 8)

Some photos below from the Saturday night meal! Big Grin
Looking forward to see others.

Yes, it was great meeting you all (when I finally got there), very interesting and you were all such excellent company. Ben, I have got your first book on order and you've inspired me to get on with my own writing...sometime.

The highlight for me was the great gag of giving me the name the restaurant used to be known by - nothing like half an hour of trudging up and down in the rain to sharpen the appetite.

Just a short note to say I hope everybody has made it back safely and in one piece. It was a privilege to meet you all, put names to faces and to show you York. I thought the presentations were top notch, and it was humbling to be in the presence of the great and good.

I need a good long sleep, but have attached a few pictures, including one of Jasper seemingly taken on Amy’s camera.

Well what can I say! Is it because I am so small or he is so tall? I blame the lighting! Big Grin

It was interesting to meet the people I have only spoken to on here for all these years now, or viewed their knowledgeable postings with not a bit of envy.
Ben, enjoyed meeting you and the conversation, and Phil was good to meet yourself.
Kai, good luck with your Phd and career, Jasper, I was somehow expecting someone taller...
Amy and John made a great effort to put this all together and obviously the late Roman Army was a well oiled machine.

However John, as an early general, you lacked in the appropriate imagination and aggressiveness required in your tactics, and Amy shone through with her superior generalship!! The result was inevitable!

Jurgen, thanks for the interesting presentation on the helmet, it was good to hear the
evidence for superior metallurgy in the construction of these helmets ,and proof they are not just fashion parade apparel!

It was a truly eyeopening weekend for me in many ways.
