New Roman/Greek movies

King Conan? Great news! I was waiting for that film since years ago! I only expect that Mr. Millius pen will be as sharp as ever and his mind enriched by years of experience!

Flavius, surely there are many Galileans in the Roman army as you say but perhaps not so many as you may suppose!
You should read more about Julian, you would realize that he wasn't half as bitter towards Christianity than Christianity was towards him!

In the meantime you have drawn my attention upon your hero, Constantinus and I've been thinking about him. You are invited to give your opinions on a new thread that I'll open:
'Was Constantine so Great?' Meet you later
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Sorry to disappoint you Aitor, but from all indications, it looks like Milius is out on the King Conan project and who knows what will happen to his script now (the Wachowski brothers now being in charge is not necessarily a good thing). Too bad too, because the first Conan was excellent.
Not to mention how they treated one another! As Ammianus observes: "Experience had taught [Julian] that no wild beasts are such dangerous enemies to man as Christians are to one another." It was like he was looking into a crystal ball....
Quote:
I don't see ow you could portray Druids as "good guys" though........
Why on earth not? Druids were not better or worse than other religious people in their days, right? They weren't an evil sectof bloddsucking zeolots, either. Sure, thewy sacrificed humans, but so did a lot of cultures. The Romans mutilated their prisoners sometimes before sending them back to their homes (I think they blinded the Gauls of Vercingetorix, and cut off their hands?).

Quote:
I don't think the masses of average Joes would like a movie about a man who was so bitter towards Christianity.
Well, that's the problem today with historical movies (and books), if you make 'em historical people just don't like or understand 'em anymore. Romans tended to look at newborn as 'un-persons' before a certain age, disposing of unwanted babies without remorse. That would seem too cruel today (and which I find an anachronism in Ford's book about Julian).
Besides that, 'I doubt that 'average Joes' would care very much that a movie would be made about Julian, as long as it would not be a pagan, anti-Christian one (which, if made in Hollywood, would be killed of by the christian right soon enough). I may be a Christian, but not a zealot. Many citizens in the world aren't, either.
In fact, I'd welcome a movie about Julian! maybe not Ford's script (that was a bit black), but any would do of this tragic episode. the Christian-bashing is very popular, these days (try and read any Arthurian novel these days), but there would be so much more interesting, up to his enigmatic death (I won't betray the plot).
It would be an interesting movie, I'm sure. Easier than reading a book on him but you got to look at the way people are today. They could never make his story acurate and historical. The writers would have some Christian guy come out at the end and defeat him or something. You know how many Christian groups would get mad if they made it accurate? I'm not saying Druids were horrible people and not saying Romans were perfect. To say a society is a "utopian" society is a dangerous thought.
In Hoc Signo Vinces

The 300 Spartans starring Richard Egan was made back in the fifties or ealry sixties. It is a startight forward telling of the persian invasion and the battle of thermopylae. It's a great movie, excellent battle scenes many extras, etc etc. It was teh top sword and sandal flick of my childhood and for many years I couldn't find it but always thought about it. You may not have heard about it before because it has been long lost to video (and not even available on rental) and only ocassionally run on late nights here and there. Until recently even a bootlegged copy could go for as high as 300 bucks. But now it's out on DVD and it's a great transfer. Don't miss it.
