Military Diploma Reconstruction- III Batavorum
#1
A couple of RMRS Saturnalias ago, picked up a Roman military diploma reconstruction- a replica of the 107 AD diploma CiL XVI 55, mentioning both III Britannorum and III Batavorum (miliaria) giving them and their heirs citizens together with the right of marriage with "their "wives", the women they were with at the time of citzenship, or if they were unmarried, those women they married afterwards, limited to one woman for each man.

The words were already scratched on to the tablet and I simply engraved them out, referring to the original text where necessary. But I'm quite pleased with the results!

wow, very interesting tablet. Well done. (and I've got another project on my list). These kind of objects are the best to explain interesting subjects of the Roman period to the public and get them involved interactively to your display.

Were these tablets not sealed or in 2 parts, or something. When challenged on their right to be acitizen the ythen sunsealed or opend the diploma?
I think my memory is a bit muddles, but I seem to recall something of a story to go with them.
Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

Heres a picture of the original, courtesy of Peronis, which should answer some of the questions.

Very smart.

It looks very smart, is it possible to get a copy in plain text so I can copy it on a brass piece. If possible the dimensions would be very nice to.
keep up yhe good work.Vale

Latin and English translations here http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=jyFdU...um&f=false

I dont have the dimensions unfortunately of the original- perhaps someone else has?
But here (hopefully ) is a picture of both. Shows up my dodgy engraving though- as the original is both deeper cut and the letters better formed.
