Roman Spatha at Bonhams
#1
This http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.s ... ctionNo=1# . Spatha was sold at Bonhams for £12,000- rather oddly, labelled as a Pompeii gladius.........

Nice blade, nevertheless. And indeed it isn't a pompeii gladius. I would also question the dating.

Me too!

There's some other military linked stuff as well, especially a military tombstone , in the catalogue.

"Acquired by the owner in Germany in the late 1970s."

Right ... Perhaps more likely "Recently looted from the Balkans"

Hmmm, i saw that sword recently somewhere. Can't recall where offhand, but the hilt looks liek a cross between spatha and the square block guard on a ring sword. I would guess late second century!

Hello

If total lenght is 68,5 cm, is short to be a spatha. Could be a narrow gladius. Or could be a fake. It's strange the way the guard plate is riveted to the guard.

Like I said it reminds me of the ring pommel swords..if you say it is quite short(I did not spot the length) then that makes me think it is a
2nd cent blade. The blade shape too is remenicent...
