Yes, and Yes
look at Amazon.com for a review.
"Just before class started, I looked in the big book where all the world's history is written, and it said...." Neil J. Hackett, PhD ancient history, professor OSU, 1987

I have this book and have found it useful. I haven't read it from start to finish, just the bits that have relevance to me, but I would recommend it.
It's a good book but her interpretation of Arrian's Tactica is criticized by Junkermann (Reiter wie Statuen aus Erz) and you should perhaps check them against other authors.
Greetings
Ave!
This book taught me more about horses in the first 10 pages than I'd ever known! (Hey, I'm INFANTRY, okay?) I thought it was fabulous, and it really gave me a new outlook on Roman cavalry.

I hadn't heard about Junkelmann's objections, but having not studied Arrian the technical points would probably be lost on me anyway. Suffice it to say that these guys were GOOD!

Vale,

Matthew/Quintus

I'd say get it. I've not heard Junkelmann's objections, but I occasionally ride a horse, and I can't find any objections.

Before you read Ann's Ars Tactica treatise, you should get her first book on the topic of Roman horsemanship, called EQUUS: the Horse in the Roman World.

I have both, and of the two, I prefer Equus as the better introduction. Warning: it'll make you want a horse so you can re-enact cavalry. (Or fall off trying!)

Cheers
Jenny

Edited by: JRSCline at: 7/10/03 11:26 am

Junkermann's objections are not to the details of horsemanship, but to her reconstructions of the more complicated exersizes described in the ars tactica of Arrian.
Greetings
