AD 200 Auxillary shield
#1
Ive been making up a hexagonal c. 200 AD shield- silvered Axel Guttmann boss (second half second, first part third century), and Batavian shield grip as found at Empel - thanks to Jurgen's work- (based on Armed Batavians the shieldhandle is period 2-3 (Period 2 12BC - AD 120, Period 3 AD 120-250) (pp61/62, plate 13 on page 324). Auxillary shield design taken from Trajans Column, as used by us Batavians, shield refaced with leather. After the pic was taken, I've edged the design in brown as suggested by Peronis.

I'll be wearing it with a Utere Felix belt as found in Lyons, and a spatha with bone roundel chape, plus a Buch helmet with black horsehair plume (not shown).

Question- as Trajans column is c 113 AD, how should I adapt the shield design to reflect an AD 200 date whilst still keeping the basic design? I've been thinking of options such as a Medusa applique, a roundel with Severus and his family, or simply a unit name on a roundel?

Thoughts? Other suggestions?

The hand grip on the hexagonal look like it will become uncomfortable quickly.
Nice work though!

wow, great shields. Well done. And I'm glad I see a nice use of that grip. I still have to put mine on the shield (which I still have to finish). But there will be some holidays again pretty soon, so maybe I'll have some time Big Grin
