It's actually an old theory; I remember it was explained to me in the late 1980s. I have explained it to others as well.

In the 1960s historical maps showed this areas being above water and subsequently inundated.
Speaking of Noah, a theory at that time held that as the land sunk it may have been protected by Dutch-style dikes (no discussion of wind mills or pumps) to maintain the land, and was flooded catastrophically when a storm came up the Gulf or an asteroid hit there or the near Indian Ocean. I don't remember all the details but the theory was offered to explain why so many Fertile Crescent cultures had a flood and survivor story has part of their national mythology. (Similarly recent theories have been advanced about cultures living in the Black Sea basin before it was inundated.)

Come on, now, Ron. You *know* that the ancients were in tune with Nature, were greatly concerned about the ecology, and always used all of whatever they hunted, managed the herds and never over-farmed or over-harvested natural resources. And they were neat and clean around the villages, right?
We know this is true, because one middle 19th Century American anthropologist, on finding a Plains Indian village is said to have remarked, "Well, we found the dump, but where is the village?"
