Scorpion
#1
Does anyone have some pictures or photos of archaeological scorpions within the Roman Empire. Even something having to do with the praetorian guard. Art from egypt would be best, even if it predates the Romans. I just need something to paint on my scabbard!

Hello Jack!

The first thing which comes into my mind is the well known Nile mosaic from Palestrina/Praeneste.
In the opinion of some scholars it depict Roman troops (including a praetorian with scorpion blazon on his shield) awaiting the future emperor Octavian.
Others (incl. me) believe it is Ptolemaic (where the scorpion is a dynastic symbol).
You will find high resolution pictures in the web (Wikimedia or Flickr should have some as far I remember).

Greets,
