de rebus bellicis
#1
Does anybody now where I can find an English translation of De Rebus Bellicis or at least a journal article that comprehensively discusses it?

I did a search of the site and couldn't see if this question has ever been raised previously, my apologies if it has.

De Rebus Bellicis (anon.), text edited by Robert Ireland, in: BAR International Series 63, part 2.

Nice discussion.

E.A. Thompson, A Roman Reformer and Inventor (Oxford, 1952). Try Ares Publishers Inc., Chicago for the 1996 reprint (which cost me about $20 ten years ago).

I have a copy of Thompson's book, it has both the Latin with English translation.

Not sure if I agree with Wiki on the date, I think most (?) historians feel it was written during the reign of Valentinian I (whom Ammianus stated was an 'inventor of arms').

I believe there is evidence in Vegetius of a description of the Currodrepanus, featured in the De Rebus Bellicis, as an anti-elephant weapon!
