The Chinese Romans redux
#31
Quote:Marco Polo is significant not because he was the first/only person to make the journey (his father and uncle had done so before him) but because he wrote a book. A relatively detailed, accurate book.
Apparently not so detailed or accurate. I have just heard a British Sinologist on the radio saying that she doesn't believe Marco Polo actually visited China. Confusedhock:

Quote:What we need are documents or artifacts.
Agreed. That would make things a lot clearer! (Consider how we know that the Romans visited other outlying parts -- e.g. deepest Germany -- and then consider the case for China. Doesn't really stack up, does it?)

Hmmm ... I'm not sure that that's a secure provenance. My Asterix figurine says "Made in Germany" on the sole of its foot. (On second thoughts, this could have some relevance to the Celtic origins thread: the Gauls are really Germans?! Confusedhock: )

You have a figurine made somewhere other than China. It must be really old. Save it; it could be a valuable artifact of an earlier era. (Aside from the inherent value due to its being Asterix.)

The Chinese nation as a whole definitely knew about the Romans after this!
