Vegetius and other Late Roman Sources

De-bugging the Bib Sad .

"BLIC search" links: My apologies to anyone who, in good faith, has tried to follow a BLIC (British Library Integrated Catalogue) link only to find it led to a sign-in page. I am easily able to access holdings profiles without signing in and I imagine anyone else is able to too. Having compared the urls placed in the Bibliography with the urls of the same pages on the day I access them, however, I note they differ. This suggests that, for whatever reason, these urls vary from day to day. I guess this gives meaning to the phrase "stable url". I have now removed the BLIC urls as they have no practical use, but left the phrase "BLIC search" to show there is a British Library holding.

"LCOC search" links: For the same reason, I won't be including any more "LCOC search" links. However, the LCCN Permalinks are just that and these will stay.

Accessing a copy of the work: Since the main aim of the Bibliography is to put interested members in touch with a copy, the best items of information I feel I can include are:
  • For reading all or part online:
Amazon links: Where these give an "inside peek" via Amazon's reader or where they give a wealth of information about obtaining some version of the book.
Google Book links: Where these give at least a "limited preview" or link to a digitized pdf of the work.
Open Library, Project Gutenberg and Internet Archive links: Where these give links to digitized pdfs or "online reads" etc.

    For purchasing personal copies:
ASIN Numbers: Amazon Standard Identification Number, a unique identification number assigned by Amazon.com and its partners for product identification within the Amazon.com organization.(See the Wikipedia article which explains the way ASINs will/won't work for you).
ISBN Numbers: International Standard Book Number, a unique numeric commercial book identifier. The 10-digit ISBN format (often seen as "ISBN 10") began in 1970 but, since 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits ("ISBN 13").
Links to individual Book Vendors: These may be useful within a limited time frame and help source a work that other sites indicate is unavailable. Such links should not be considered stable in the long term.

    For library use:
Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress Call Numbers: These will vary in some details between and often within libraries, but typical examples may well point you to the right stack without having to consult the catalogue. But librarians interpret these codes so, where a "typical" example I give fails, use the library catalogue - and don't be surprised if there are wild differences.

Cheers

Hi Latin experts out there!

Anyone able to translate this inscription from a book I'm looking at?

"Editio emendatior et copiosior, consilio B. G. Niebuhrii C. F. instituta, auctoritate Academiae litterarum regiae borussicae continuata."

It's from a volume in the series Corpus Scriptorum Historiae Byzantinae.

For context, Barthold Georg Niebuhr was a prominent Prussian classical scholar of the early 1800s. He was closely associated with the start of this series of some 50 volumes. After his death in 1831, the above inscription (evidently some sort of enduring dedication) was printed on each title page of the series.

Hello Howard,

I hope you don't mind a non-expert giving a try:

(This) Edition is emended and enriched*, having been started on counsel of Barthold Niebuhr, son of Carsten (Niebuhr) it is continued on authority of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences

* I really don’t know from which Verb “copiosior” is derived. It is certainly not a comparative adjective in this inscription. Also, I’d doubt my English here…

I certainly don't mind your having a go at all. I don't know why you'd necessarily doubt your English - it's very good and certainly much better than my German let me tell you.

The only two words or phrases I find myself looking at are "enriched" and "continued on authority of...". Certainly not that I think they're incorrect, but rather I wonder what the intent of the inscription was. Was it meant to carry an emotional charge? If yes, then "enriched"; if not, then, maybe, "expanded", "improved" or so on.

The "on authority of..." is interesting as it implies a great deal of respect for Niebuhr. I mean, it sounds as if his physical presence had driven the series and that his absence might have been seen as a threat to the longevity of the series. There also seems to be something Wagnerian about "son of Carsten" - or perhaps that was a convention in such inscriptions.

Anyhoo, my thanks again Kai,
Big Grin

Good to know I could help you, Howard! I looked again into it now. “on authority of” was indeed due to my English, I meant something like “by authorship of”, if that can be better understood.

As for “copiosior“, I came to think it is pseudo-Latin, a Latinized form of the German verb kopieren. So the edition was emended, i.e. corrupt passages were restored, and copied, in the sense of replicated.
Next try: (This) Edition is emended and copied, having been started on counsel of Barthold Georg Niebuhr, son of Carsten (Niebuhr), it is continued by authorship of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences

True it is a show of respect, although the son of Carsten-part is not Wagnerian – it is entirely Roman; that is how I figured it out in the first place. Initially I looked for official Prussian abbreviation but by chance when reviewing a Roman inscription I remembered at once that f often means filius. And as his father was a quite famous man named Carsten, it would make sense noting him in this Roman fashion.

Thanks, Kai.

I'm happy with the "authority of" solution though I take your point of trying to balance the semantics between English and German. Would "revised" be a possible interpretation of "copiosior"?

I have just updated the Johannes Lydus bibliography on the previous page with nine print (book) sources. While I'm cannibalising Ardian's list next, I'll still be revisiting Vegetius and Lydus. If anyone wants to lob in another frequently referred-to ancient source/ other frequently-referred-to ancient sources, I'll be happy to have a go at him/them.

Cheers
