Cowan Thesis
#1
Good morning,

Well, it is here in Belfast .. that is it is morning but the weather is foul.

I notice in the bibliography of his Osprey book "Imperial Roman Legionary AD 161-284" Ross Cowan includes his thesis on the Severan field army. Is this available in any form?

Are there any other decent and accessible sources for the army in this period?

Best Wishes

Rather than consult my thesis, the few interesting bits of which were distilled into the Legionary book, I suggest you look at M.C. Ibeji's thesis, 'The Evolution of the Roman Army During the Third Century AD', also available for free download at ETHOS:

The best study of the army in this period is P. Cooper's 'The Third Century Origins of the 'New' Roman Army', D.Phil thesis, Oxford 1968 - unfortunately not on ETHOS.
