That works as it's own event. If there were more of those types of events maybe they would leave the Medieval Faires alone. Everyone needs an outlet but the themes should be enforced at least somewhat. That said the column of Xena Wannabes wasn't horrible (I would dress as Hercules  My bro could pull of Iolaos!) and The Witchking wasn't too shabby either.

The Spartan, that will be the guy in the 300 costume, the fact that he is at a 'ren fair' will further illustrate his confusion.

Hopefully not in fully authentic Spartan battledress. These are family-oriented events. We've gone to a local Renfaire in full Roman kit. Folks loved the armor. Some kept calling us gladiators, but after we cruxified the first few they got the message. We justified our existence (as could the Spartan) by saying that we came from the classical past to check up on what they were doing with our art, culture, and trechnology since it had been ""re-born". Several years ago I saw a guy at King Richard's with a beautiful suit of Samurai armor. He told me he's gotten a lot of flak for being "out of period" when actually, he was one of the most period correct characters in sight, just a little ways from home.

On the other hand: what are the odds that among that crowd are people willing to delve deeper and 'go accurate'? Renaissance magazine's circulation is almost double the size of Skirmish I think. Anyone ever seriously tried to reach out?

Oh, cool! Like a sci-fi convention outdoors. Great setting, looks like a nice day, too. And some fabulous costumes! Heck of a lot better than the one fairy festival I was at (not my fault! My wife was a merchant!). I wanted to hang giant strips of fly paper around...

Thanks for the link!

Randi - Right. That's one of the quirky things about the SCA here in the States, many kingdoms/chapters allow cross-cultural/continental appearances, which can actually make it a whole lot of fun, a real living timeline, as in "this is what was worn on the other end of the world, you know, the edge where you fall off?" Big Grin

I don't remember where I saw the photo, but when Japan was 'opened' to the world in the 1800's, there was an expedition of Japanese delegates and whatnot who went on a world tour. I saw this photo of a bunch of Japanese, including Samurai, with people carrying parasols, touring the Great Pyramids. It was such an amazing juxtaposition, and a stunning visual to imagine such a 'clash' of far-reaching cultures.

As for Steampunk, I think it looks like a lot of fun. Maybe it's part of my scale modeling and Artist nerdiness showing, but I think that genre gives people a lot of creative leeway that you can't see or really get away with, with say Ren Faires, as we're happily joking on.

Matt Amt - Glad you like "Meadermaid" I'm pretty proud of that myself Big Grin

Here's another one, thanks to other's postings: Xenaboobia. Talk about "huge tracks of land"...Xena's let herself go with one too many Turkey Legs.

This site has come to the attention of RAT before, but it is worth visiting again, even though it is not strictly RenFaire.
