New(ish) book on Roman military equipment
#1
My sources tell me that an English translation of Michel Feugère's 1993 book *Les armes des romains de la République à l'Antiquité tardive* is soon to be published in English. More as soon as my spies report...
Ha, I wish! I don't buy NEARLY as many books as I'd like to, though I do try to keep up with the basics in the "hardware" subjects. There are even a couple Connollys and Ospreys that I don't own. But I'll be taking a look at this one when it appears.
It is a very good book indeed, with plenty of pictures and a helmet classification different from Robinson. Good info on republican weapons, several references --including pictures-- from Connolly and more importantly from several german authors who unfortunately are not translated into english or french.
The question of the attribution to cavalry or infantry, or both, of the Niedebeber or Heddernheim type helmet is left unanswered.
That one was answered --very boldy IMHO-- by Stephenson in a short, too short book about late roman infantry equipment.
I wonder why there isn't yet a heated debate about that, actually...
Feugère completed his work with another book especially dealing with helmets: "Les Casques Antiques" and I certainly hope this one will be translated too.
Although a short book it covers the whole period from mycenian to late imperial times. Very picture rich, with a whole chapter devoted to masked helmets. There are also several photos of Guisborough (or neo-attic, or Hollywod) style helmets including, of course the deliciously ugly Teilenhofen piece, but also a helmet from Romania that looks eerily alike those worn by the troopers on the trajanic reliefs re-used on the arch of Constantine. Including what apparently looks like a circular plume holder at the top that would be perfect to hold the mysterious wheel shaped crests depicted on the reliefs.
Highly recommended. Even in french, just for the pictures.
I spotted this on Oxbow; how does this book compare with Feugere's?
Römische Helme
by Marcus Junkelmann
An invaluable and well presented survey of the development of the Roman helmet from its Hellenistic origins in the 4th century BC until the 3rd century AD when each province of the vast empire had its own distinctive types. The first half of the book discusses the chronology of the helmets, differences between infantry and cavalry helmets, their construction and distribution, supported by large maps and photographs. The second half of the book is an illustrated catalogue of surviving helmets, cheek guards, fragments or representations of helmets on other pieces of armour, many of which are previously unpublished, accompanied by detailed descriptions. German text. 208p, 24 col and 112 b/w pls, maps (Sammlung Guttmann 2000)
I just bought a Pompeii blade from Mark Morrow, as well as several other books (the new Osprey uniform's book, as well as others you already have), so I'll have to tiptoe for a week or so....
But you only live once, so I ordered it. You have something to look forward to next fabricum.
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.

*sigh* which one to get first? The Romische Helme is stuck with the small publisher (so Brown Books tells me) and hopefully will get here in another four months or so...
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.

Don't lok no!
Unfortunately, Tempus has a very bad website, showing only a very limited number of their publications about Roman Britain or the Roman Empire. If you didn't know any better, they are not even attempting to sell these very recent titles! Amazon.co.uk does not have a review of it (yet), something for you Sander. You might win the £50 gift certificate!!
