September 28, 48 BC: Pompey the Great is assassinated on the orders of King Ptolemy of Egypt after landing in Egypt.

September 28, 351 AD: Magnentius is beaten by Constantius in the battle of Mursa Major (Ossijek).

September 28, 365 AD: Procopius, a cousin of the late Julian, usurps the throne in Constantinople with the help of troops marching home from Valens' Persian campaign. Several of Valens´ units defect to Procopius at Mygdus on the river Sangarius (Sakyrna). Valens is nearly captured near Chalcedon.

September 28, 409 AD: Groups of Vandals, Alans and Suevi invade Spain after the forces of Constantine III leave the Pyrennees passes unguarded.

September 29, 522 BC: Darius I of Persia kills Smerdis (also called Bardiya of the Magian usurper Gaumâta), securing his hold as king of the Persian Empire.

September 29, 480 BC: Battle of Salamis: The Greek fleet under Themistocles defeats the Persian fleet under Xerxes I. After defeat at Thermopylae, the Greeks were anxious to bring battle to the Persians again. The Persian navy sailed into the Straits of Salamis and tried to block both entrances. In the cramped conditions of the Straits the great Persian numbers were an active hindrance, as ships struggled to maneuver and became disorganised. Seizing the opportunity, the Greek fleet formed in line and scored a decisive victory, sinking or capturing at least 200 Persian ships.

September 29, 61 BC: Pompey the Great celebrates his third triumph for victories over the pirates and the end of the Mithridatic Wars on his 45th birthday.
