Good history bookshops in London?
#1
Hello

Anyone that knows a good history bookshop in London? Gonna make a quick visit to the Big Smoke and would like to find one (second hand is welcome)

Thank you very much!

There used to be a good second-hand bookshop in the street that begins opposite the British Museum.

The Museum bookshop is sadly no longer there. You could try Foyles and there are many other new and second hand books shops in the immediate vicinity along Tottenham Court Road. Nearby Motor Books is also good for specialist Military History books.

That is sad news indeed. It's where I bought my copy of Syme's Roman Revolution.

Yes, a sad loss. I agree that Foyles is a good bet, though one bookshop on Marylebone High Street files books according to where they are set, not by subject or author. A wondeerful browsing bookshop if you have time.
Blackwells opposite Foyles is also good.
Outside London, an honorable mention to Allan bookshop by Manchester station, which has an excellent selection of early and late Roman books, including archaeological reports.

Cheers

Or Oxbow books in Oxford! You could get the Oxford Tube (bus) from Victoria station for £16 return and a four hour journey.

Thank you very much for the hints!

Definetly haven´t got enought time to go to Oxford, although I know Oxbow books via Abebooks. But I will check Foyles, Motor Books and the second hand bookshops you point me close to Tottenham Court Road.

Hope Easyjet are understanding if I return overloaded... Tongue

Best regards

I have to agree with Graham Sumner: Foyle's at 113–119 Charing Cross Road is your best bet in London. There's a Blackwell's Bookshop across the road but it has a much smaller selection. If you are willing to travel to Oxford (worth the trip anyway) go to Blackwells at 23-25 Broad Street - it has quite the best history book section (1st floor) of any book shop in the UK.
