Pontius Pilate
#1
What do we know about him in addition to the new testament. An inscription was found and there is supposed to be a letter from him to Tiberius about the events that took place in Jerusalem after the crucifixion. Is it for real

I'm pretty sure there are several threads on this forum covering that. A search for his name should bring up a few conversations....

putting "pontius pilate" in the search box in the above title bar, I got 52 matches, though some are contained within the same threads as others.

If you are thinking of this letter, I think it is universally believed to be a forgery. This paper from the 1960s says that the Vatican Archives called it a fake. Things like this were fairly common in the first couple centuries AD. For instance, there are fake letters from Marcus Aurelius saying the Christians saved the army during the Rain Miracle. There are fake letters between St. Paul and Seneca. The Loeb Classic Library often prints these as appendices in their volumes.

I've read two traditions about Pilate. One says that he converted to Christianity. Another that he was so guilty about killing Jesus that he committed suicide.
