Good or Bad Greek Replica?
#1
Hello,

This is along the same lines as my post in the Roman forum - I have been given a small budget to produce Greek workshops in a school. I wanted to buy some key items for the pupil to gain a feel of the Greek armour, however after lots of reading on the internet i am beginning to worry about bad replica's.
Could someone please tell me which of these helmets (if any) would pass as good replica's?
I will be thankful for any help!

Hello. One could say that some lisense should be allowed since these items are intended for a school and not for actual re-enacting,but my opinion is that since they're for a school, they should be even more carefully chosen. That said, none of these items is "acceptable" You can find way better equipment with about the same cost. First of all,the helmets should be bronze or brass, not steel. The best affordable helmets are produced by Daniyal Steel Crafts in my opinion. Take a look at this thread <!-- l <a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=28865">viewtopic.php?f=16&t=28865<!-- l you'll have some variety of helmets to choose from.
The only greek sandals available at this moment are aslo from DSC and you can find out more about them here in this thread: <!-- l <a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=28363">viewtopic.php?f=16&t=28363<!-- l
Their prices are really affordable.
You may find a dealer for the helmets, but i'm almost certain that nobody has the sandals yet,so you might order them directly from DSC.

Yup, agreed. While those first two helmets give an approximation of the look and feel of a Greek helmet, you can do better for about the same cost. Both are spinoffs of the Deepeeka "Italo-Corinthian", by some other Asian manufacturer--you can tell because the raised edge around the eyeholes continues as a ridge straight across the top of the nasal. Real helmets aren't like that, and on Deepeeka's version the raised edge follows the nasal (at least part of the way down).

The third helmet is a loss, a cast piece of "sculpture" that probably weighs 20 pounds and costs a fortune. The sandals seem to be Roman caligae, and not the best ones available!

Go with Daniyal! Khaire,

Thank you once again!

The steel should have been an obvious one!
The explanation of the ridge is exactly the kind of help i needed as it's those kinds of details i am unsure of, and i all honesty i had thought the third helmet was very peculiar to say the least.

I think sometimes i get a bit naive with what the 'salesmen' are telling me on ebay! The DSC sandals will be my first buy i think.
Learning lots from your recommendations and am very thankful :0)

I have a brass version of the steel helmet, mine has a crest which attracted me to it, looked great in the ad photo and I bought it without doing enough research (wish I had joined RAT sooner) it is too late for me, but you can save yourself! LOL Big Grin
