Middle republican Roman pila and velites’ javelins
#1
I’m looking for info on wood types used for production of shafts for those weapons by Romans in the 4th – 2nd century BC for my reconstruction of Roman gear from that period. As far as I know, we don’t have any wooden parts of pila other than those from 1st century AD, from Oberraden (BTW, from what kind of wood were those made?). Are there any complete pila finds from Alesia? I guess we don't have any examples older than that...
Maybe someone knows what types of trees were dominating in Italy in this period, and were most likely used for making weapons?
