If anyone ever plans to walk along Wansdyke I'm interested.

Where is that now? I know, I could look on wiki, but thought I would ask.

Edit, ok I wiki'd it and found a site discussing it. Oddly enough, it is created by a guy named Robert Vermaat!
Imagine that lol

I've done the first bit, from Maes Knoll to just south of Bath but it's not easy. Huge sections are impossible to trace and there are a lot of hedges to be negotiated. Also, it's not a footpath so there's no right of access to a lot of it.

But then you know that already.

If you ever fancy having a go at the western end (and going up to the forts in Bristol where they think it originally started), it's all within easy distance of my house if you wanted to use that as a base.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Tony. Well done again!

I've split this off from the Hadrian's Wall Charity walk thread.
I think Wansdyke is likely to have been a Late Roman construction, as was the conclusion from one of the latest research projects on West Wansdyke:
Erskine, Jonathan G.P.: The West Wansdyke: an appraisal of the dating, dimensions and construction techniques in the light of excavated evidence, in: Archaeological Journal, Volume 164, Number 1, June 2007, pp. 80-108.

Btw, does anybody have this article?

Indeed. Big Grin cry:

That's a nice offer Matt!

Btw, have you read these articles about Late Roman SW Britain? I bet you have, but I found it only recently when Byron made me think about the Wiki article (which I amended slightly).

Read 'em, went to the symposium, got the t-shirt 8) (doesn't fit me any more though).

If you mean walking it in LR kit, I would like to join. Not this year, though, as I'll have my walk for this year already planned.

I would probably be up for such an enterprise as well, and as I live in the Midlands, Somerset is hardly a million miles away. It might also make up somewhat for having to miss out on going to Rome and Nijmegen this year.

Careful there Matt - my family found entering and occupying Somerset was quite easy the last time we did it (with Sir Nicholas Slanning and Lord Hopton on that occasion of course). Tongue

Ah, but I was out that day.

Seriously though chaps, I'm back and forth to Libya this year and it's probably too late to arrange something anyway but I could find bed or floor space for 6-10 people if there's interest in walking some of the Somerset section of the Wansdyke in kit next year.

That begs the question - what route do you have in mind?
