...Those spraypaint-vandals again ?!
But seriuosly folks: man was i shocked when I saw the Heidelberg Mithräum at the Kurpfälzische Museum "in full warpaint". hock: There is evidence, however, that most public (and private) monuments were painted in those times -- those days' "pop-art" ? 8) So why not pink AND doted tunics ? Greez Siggi

Just for kicks ...is there a Latin version available ? (I mean original Latin not latin american  )
An old friend of mine (a studied archeologist) once told me about a similar scene in his younger days. So -- is this customary amongst archeologists ? :? Greez Simplex

on a slightly unrelated note, by using all that stuff to bounce lights off trajans column etc... I wonder if there would be a method for taking small samples of whatever chemicals might be on the stone from the paints, and from that working out what colours they were? surely the paints would all be made from different pigments?

I would have thought that if any pigment had survived anywhere, it would be on the casts in the V & A, as these were made before the age of modern pollution which must surely have compromised, if not destroyed, anything which remained of the paint on the column itself. If anything still survived when the casts were made, then it might be reasonable to suppose that some of it might have been taken off with the impression material and could have been deposited on the casts, much in the same way that some of the Elephant Man's hair ended up on the cast of his head. Just a thought, which I am sure has been proposed many times before.

I think they actually do have paint remains on the casts, IIRC, I think some one mentioned it on here somewhere!

Hi Lucius,
so, the infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) microscopy show´s that they use a lot of colors. Not only red and never white! The soldiers clothing was in green, red, blue ...tunics in different colors, cheques and stripes. I wanna show in my book that the roman time was colorful and not plane. They painted their armor in different colors. It is difficult to believe that but that´s the truth. That is the reason that we use blue Segmentata for our Praetorians.

Amazing to see. Any idea about the gold cross emblem on their right pectoral area?

They are helmets slung over the shoulder.....the crosses are the re-inforcements on the crown.
Any speculation as to actual colours is, AFIK, just that - pure speculation. If anyone knows of an actual study or attempts to use 'spectrographic' studies of T.'s column it would be nice to hear about.....instead of April fool's jokes and 'spoofs'
