Participate in Experimental Archaeology :-)
#1
Hi All!
As some of you already know, I am leading a project on experimental archaeology at Augsburg University. We are making a march from sept. 15th to sept. 29th 2010 along the Via Claudia Augusta, from Donauwörth to Füssen. During the march we will make educative visits to schools situated along the road, as well as undertake several archaeological experiments, most of them having to do with objects from the Augsburg-Oberhausen hoard and finds from the Auerberg, all this in cooperation with the University of Regensburg, E. Deschler-Erb (RAT: Helveticus Palatinae) from the University of Zurich, Robert Wimmers / noviolocus, the Roman Museum Augsburg, and, probably, the German Army.

As is usually the case with such university projets, it is a bit underfinanced...

In case you know someone who is willing to support the project or you yourself want to do so, please contact me via pm.

All donors will be listed by name in the final publication.

If you donate more than 100.- € you will receive a free copy of the final publication, personally signed by all participants.

You can also adopt / sponsor a certain experiment, if you are interested in this, please contact me for further detail. If you do adopt an experiment, you will be mentioned in the relevant article in the final publication, appear in the donator´s list, receive a free copy signed by all the participants, plus you will get one of the reconstructions / objects that were relevant for the experiment you adopted.

Would be happy to hear from many of you... ^^

Cheers! Christian

Who's that sleeping lad in the second picture? He seems familiar to me...

Anyway, thanks for the great week I had with you and your guys. It was a wonderful experience, and I hope to be marching again next year Big Grin
I've also posted links to two live clips in the events section.

The videos were fascinating, even without being able to understand a word of German.

I like such projects very much, as they raise public attention and could attract many to become interested in that matter. I wished I would be in Europe to see this all...

You could ask some of the Footwear producers to provide a few samples in return for a review and mention in the report. It sounds like spare footwear would be a useful addition to the march equipment.

Unfortunately I'll be unable to attend. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the results and the book.

A note for non-German speakers: The email you receive after submitting your vote states that you have THREE votes. In order to give all three votes to this project, you have to go through the voting process three times.

It didn´t work out, but thanks to those who supported us! :-)

Something new coming up:
Next year between August 5 and August 26 we will conduct two experiments in a cooperation network between the Europäischer Kulturpark Bliesbruck-Reinheim, Augsburg University and Passau University. I will lead an experiment in which my students will reconstruct a Roman well with a double-cylindre-pump, my colleague from Passau will test a Roman hook-plow based on a find from the Archäologische Staatssammlung München. The well-reconstruction will take place between August 5 and August 19.

Members of RAT (Female or Male, from wherever on the globe) have the possibility to participate in the well reconstruction, I have TWO spots for them. Bring your own tent. If you want to get in touch with our work, this is a great opportunity. You will learn a great deal about methods of experimental archaeology and documentation, as well as Roman wells and digging... ^^ You may but must not wear Roman garb, and must be of full age and have personal insurance.

Last but not least: We are looking for donations again! If you want to support either of the experiments or both, please contact me via PM. Support includes an honorable mention in the publication(s), of course!

Donators from Germany will get a receipt, your donation is tax-deductable :-)
