Ritterling

Given the frequency with which it is mentioned, E. Ritterling's entry "Legio" in the 1925 _Realencyclopaedie_ (XII.2) (please excuse the umlaut-deficiency), must be a truly valuable source. I've never been able to locate a copy -- I don't read German well, but could possibly work it out, with help. Is it in the public domain? Making a version available online would be a very welcomed contribution. Of course, an English translation would be even better!) yes, it's almost incredible what a valuable source Ritterling's legio article still is for us and how much work he has put in it back in the second and third decade of the last century. I can imagine that over in the U.S. it can be difficult to locate a copy of the Realencyclopädie when you are not in the situation to have a good university or institute library nearby - and even if, often exactly the volume(s) with the legio article is/are the first to go...

There's no complete version of it online (as far as I know, but I have searched intensively for it two or three years ago); Jasper only found out that here the German original of the part about leg. XX VV has been made available on a website.

Around the end of last year, some of the RA.com staffers started to translate parts of the original with the aim to include it in the resources section there, but this I think was stopped when they realized that this congress report had appeared in 2000 - kind of an update of nearly all the legions on the basis of "legio" in the first volume and a second with contributions about "the legions in history". Most of the articles therein are in German, French and English but some also in Spanish and Italian. My recommendation: one should have this! Not so much German at least... - why only nobody of you folks wants to learn this great language?!
The Congress of the Univ of Lyons looks like a great resource EXCEPT for those of us who don't speak: German, French, Italian, et al. Could someone translate this and make it available??

Well, let's just say some of us are still thinking about translating the original. I have that congress report and it is indeed an update on most of the legions. However, some are just like software updates: you need the original.
Then again, the Ritterling article is over 600 columns! I'm quite prepared to do my bit. Who's up for another legion or two?
Greets
I MUST have that book, (Les légions de Rome sous le Haute Empire), especially as French is MUCH more accessible to me than German. Can anyone suggest the most efficient way to order it (I'm in the US)?
Thanks, John
PS I often wish I had learned German along with French -- so many of the things that interest me now rely heavilly on German scholarship. But the option just wasn't available where I went to college. And, I'm afraid I'm too old a puppy to properly apply myself to learning it now. -- jjh

You can order it at www.decitre.fr or at www.deboccard.com for 90 euros + shipping (two volumes). Both on-line bookstores deliver to the USA.

The book is published by the University of Lyon and usually runs out of stock, so maybe the best option is at De Boccard (the second link), since I think they are the distributers.
I had no problems whatsoever with deboccard, ordered it this January. Since this kind of book doesn't sell too quickly, chances are they have some lying around.
Greets
