In the library of Alexandria there were 500000 rolls . Not one has survived. Nore indeed are there any from all the other libraries bar Herculaneum (see below)<br>

We get through vast amounts of paper and so did the romans In Egypt there are records that show one office the financial got through 434 rolls of Papyrus (each roll about 12m long) in a month<br>

How much would the Govt of the Empire in Rome use? Very little of the Egyptian stuff survives and NONE of the Roman<br>

Each Legion was paid 3 times a year and each payment was noted on a voucher . Each year the 25 legions would produce 375000 vouchers and in the 300 years from Augustus to Diocletian there would be 225,000000 individual records Hardly any of these survive.<br>

If Army admin in Britain used wood not papyrus that is a lot of wood!! <p></p><i></i>
