Cavalry helmet cheekpieces.

Hello!!

I need your help. Do you have info (specially pictures) about cavalry helmets cheekpieces? I'm interested in weiler type, but isolated exemples are welcome, too. I'm working in a weiler helmet for a cavalry impression.

I remember one decorated with punctim, but don't have the picture.

Another question (Adrian?) is that the original cheekpiece that Deepeeka have used for his weiler, lacks the ear. It's possible that cheekpiece belongs to an infantry helmet? Opinions?

The cheek plate from Gloucester (without the repoussé ear) could plausibly be from an infantry helmet, but a highly decorated one I would think. My opinion is that is is from a cavalry hemt but simply a variation of the plates with ear decoration.

Here is my list of Weiler/Koblenz-Bubenheim cheek pieces. Those from Wels, Gloucester, Kingsholm, London, Standwix, Hateg, Jerusalem and Nijmegen had no ears so this feature would not appear that unusual. THe Stanwix helmet had punched decoration and the South Shields helmet incised (not sure whether those are the right terms. I will post a list of complete helmets with cheek pieces shortly. I have pictures of most of these cheek pieces so PM me if you need anything:

It is actually the South Shields cheekpiece, which is in Arbeia museum, with a copy in the GNM in Newcastle. Were you quivering with excitement when you took this?!

The South Shields cheekpiece is punctim decorated (this is a photo I took of the replica now in the GNM that was used as the cover photo for Shire Archaeology 59 Roman Military Equipment back in 1989). It is actually a scan of the cover and has a couple of creases on it, but it saved finding the slide and scanning it ;-) )

The original is made of a copper alloy. So far as I know, no attempt has been made to determine whether it is of brass or bronze.

Hey ho you live and learn. When I photographed it all those years ago, it was the copy in the Museum of Antiquities I photographed.
