Tacitus, Annals 14.29: "He therefore prepared to attack the island of Mona which had a powerful population and was a refuge for fugitives. So it looks like he did indeed ferry his troops at the narrowest point, where the cavalry could swim their horses across. These 'flat bottomed vessels' would not be much use in the open sea, I shouldn't think.
