Roman Coins

Hi -I am looking to start collecting some Roman coins.....interested in the coins of the empire but not really the provincial coins...any recommendations on where to start???....the bronze coins seem most available and the cheapest but I am drawn to finding some silver ! I am trying to decide on a period to start at and then try to gather some coins of some emperors in succession etc....thanx
