Mosaics of Zeugma
#1
Just found this on Google video, http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 226590901#
It's the Horizon programme from 2002 about the mosaics found at Zeugma, Turkey and the work to save as many as possible before the vally was flooded as part of the Euphrates dam project, (the quality's not great and it does have a .com addy right where some subtitles go but it's still worth watching).
There are some beautiful pieces there and it's absolutely heartbreaking when you realise just how much has been lost. It was this programme that I was watching that started everything off for me Big Grin

I think that the actual damage is not that big, although it is certainly irreparable. However, the site was excavated and as far as I know, they covered the entire area. Rather quickly of course. From this area, all mosaics were brought to the Gazi Antep museum, which -somewhere between my visits in 2003 and 2007- was converted into a splendid place. For once optimimistic, I think it is possible to overstate the damage. Some of my photos here.

Thanks for the update, I'd be really interested to see if any more mosaics are found. Did you have any problems taking photos in the museum? Hopefully I'll be out there at the end of this year.

No, they're usually easy-going in Turkey.

Just a side-reference. This bridge was also submerged by the Turkish Euphrates dam project, though some time earlier. I wonder if it still exists on the lake bottom. :?:
