The earliest arch bridge in Rhodes, Greece (need help)
#1
The Rhodes Footbridge is an ancient Greek arch bridge in the city of Rhodes, Greece. Dating to the 4th century BC it appears that it is the very first true arch bridge of the ancient world. Prior to the Rhodes culvert, only beam bridges and corbel arch bridges were in existence in the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Asia Minor and Greece (and beyond).

The modest structure was excavated in 1966?67 close to the eastern harbour of the city of Rhodes, the Akandia Bay. There, an artificial channel of 2.15 m depth ran parallel to the ancient city walls. Nearly at midpoint, the canal is crossed by a 8 m wide arch of wedge-shaped stones which served as the footbridge depicted. The curved opening has a single span of 2.8 m, identical to the width of the canal.

Is somebody here by chance living on Rhodes and could make a shot of the small bridge, if it is still there: http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/4707 ... masboy.jpg The Akandia harbour is the large bay to the right: http://wikimapia.org/6669689/Akandia-Harbour
