Would like to hear from reenactors who do a Legionary Doctor impression about the kit they use.
I am guessing that it would consist of;
Medical Instrument Set
Linen and wool Bandages
Mortar and Pestle
Wood case with glassware for liquids and small boxes and bags for herbs
Metal ware pots for boiling water and herb preparation
Small Fire grate
Spoons and bowls
Cords for tourniquets

It's fun to have a trepanning drill, if you can get or make one. That and a couching needle for eyeball surgery are great for cringes and gross-outs. But what REALLY gets them is a simple length of brass tubing, slightly S-curved, for a urethral catheter--THAT makes them cringe!
Oh, remember to have a supply of lead powder and mercury!

Our surgeon also has a bone-saw, which gets plenty of reaction from the audience at the Higgins Armory Museum.

Don't forget the cauterys and a couple of retractor hooks. That always gets a nice reaction during a demonstration...a nice sizzle, bit of smoke and the smell of burning flesh usually sees a few faces go pale.
But then it's not a good surgery demo unless you've had a couple of fainters.
A set of those toothed forceps that can be used for crushing either uvulas or hemorrhoids usual provoke a reaction too...although I've not worked out a way of demonstrating those on a life patient yet.

My kit was made by various bods, some of it custom made. The 'off the shelf stuff' was either from Steve Wagstaff (UK trader, no website but can provide contact details as he can supply everything from cataract lances to a speculum) or Holger.
Holger's got some nice medical bits on his website at the moment. Under 'Roman - Other Items'

Ave to All,
Thanks for the information. Jaqui and I are busy on a number of, unfortunately, mundane things right now. We are, however keeping an interest in this particular field of medicine.

Ave all,
My Lady Antonia (my best half Jaqui) wanted me to suggest clamps that can be used as retractors or retractors and if needed, she will provide a list of herbs and prepared meds that would have been in common use during any specific period one might need as this area is a favourite hobby of hers for sometime.....considering she is studying to become a nurse-practioner. I will P.M. those of you who are willing to give us the addresses for the medical tools. Cinnabar would have been used for the Mercury preparation as it was easy to obtain considering it was being mined in ESpain usually in conjunction with iron or silver ore at the time. The sulfur content would have made it unusually effective in wound treatment and as a side note, has been used for at least 2000 years for the extraction of gold from its matrix rock. Hope this helps,
Salve,

Maximio from the RMRS does a great field surgeon impression at events, blood and all.

The legio nona hispana has one legionary doctor (he is a real doctor in fact), and their public shows about trepanations are famous
