Books for Raw Recruit
#1
What are the recommendations for stocking a reference library for someone new to re-ennacting. Please, books that are currently available! I know there were a lot of good titles out there that are now out of print but they won't do me any good if I can't get my hands on them (unless someone is willing to photocopy at cost). I have some armouring experience so titles with good diagrams or pictures to help me put a kit together would be helpful.
Hit the Legio XX Bibliography page,
Start with anything by Peter Connolly, then get the ones by Peterson, Sumner, and maybe a couple of the Osprey books. For general army history and info get Goldsworthy, Peddie, Hyland, and Keppie.
Mike Bishop has promised us a new edition of his (and Jon Coulston's!) "Roman Military Equipment" (WE'RE WAAIITINNNNG!!), which is truly indispensible, but the first edition is out of print. There are some other threads on this board about used copies of Robinson's "Armour of Imperial Rome" for less than a zillion bucks, also a good thing to have.
That should get you started! Vale,
