Novaesium
#1
Studying legionary fortesses on the Rhine I've faced with a problem.
The problem is a different classification of Novaesium camps in modern studies.
In some works the camps at Novaesium are classified as Lager A-K and in another as Lager A-H.
For instance, the castellum built on the place of abandoned legionary camp is mentioned as Lager H in one book and as Lager L in another and the famous Koenenlager is Lager G or Lager K respectively.
Which classification is more correct?

Hi,
I actually live in Novaesium/Neuss since about a year.
There is a very thorough site from a local student of archeology about Neuss during roman times, but it is only available in German.
http://www.novaesium.de/
Here is the part about the different military camps:
http://www.novaesium.de/lager.htm
A-F were useds and build upon the same site in the Meertal from around 20BC/15BC up until 43AD.
It seems that A is considered the earliest roman camp on the Rhine.
G (the Koenenlager) was build around 43AD on another site, probably because the Rhine was schifting its course towards the earlier site.
H was not used by any Legion anymore but is considered the camp for an Auxilliary Ala.
They build the camp on the same site as G but a lot smaler.

Hope this helps.

Hi Olaf!

Thanks for reply.
I know this very useful site very well and it's not a problem to me that it's in German, weil ich kann auch Deutsch lesen Smile
But I also have a book "Das römische Neuss", where the classification is a bit different:
Lager A-I built from 16 BC to AD 32/35
Lager K - from 32/35 to 105
And auxiliary Lager L built in the middle of II AD on the place of legionary fortress.
So I'm curious about this discrepancy.
