Celtic schields
#1
Does somebody has information (articles, monographies) about Celtic schields and their using in Hellenistic armies?

This is a neglected subject which is ripe for thorough investigation. Some of the best sources:

P.F. Stary, "Ursprung und Ausbreitung der eisenzeitlichen Ovalschilde mit spindelförmigem Schildbuckel," in Germania 59 (1981): 287-306.

Juliet Gunby, "Oval Shield Representations on the Black Sea Littoral," in Oxford Journal of Archaeology 19, 4 (2000): 359-365.

M. Eichberg, Scutum: die Entwicklung einer italisch-etruskischen Schildform von den Anfaengen bis zur Zeit Caesars (Frankfurt: Peter Lang, 1987).

This topic is unfortunately only briefly discussed in each of these works, but these are by far the best works relating to the subject. In the future I hope to be able to publish a much more complete investigation of the spread of the thureos throughout the Greek world.
Ruben

He had with him the selfsame rifle you see with him now, all mounted in german silver and the name that he\'d give it set with silver wire under the checkpiece in latin: Et In Arcadia Ego. Common enough for a man to name his gun. His is the first and only ever I seen with an inscription from the classics. - Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

A Spartan, being asked a question, answered "No." And when the questioner said, "You lie," the Spartan said, "You see, then, that it is stupid of you to ask questions to which you already know the answer!"
