Topics to avoid in Reenacting

Hear is my list of Topics to avoid in Roman reenacting unless you just can't resist silly name calling arguments from people who act like members of the US Congress (or other legislative bodies elsewhere)

The list:

Tunic color (red or white or other)
Scutum shape (there is inadequate evidence to support your {SHORT SQUAT, TALL SKINNY, ROUNDED, TRAPAZOID} reconstruction)
Scutum painting design (as in everyone should use THIS one)
You copied MY (copyrighted) scutum design
You can't be the BLANK legion I picked it first and it is copyrighted
The correct command for BLANK is BLANK because BLANK

This post is to remind everyone to think before you type and try to act like adults and NOT to restart the continuing non winnable arguments about any of the above.

Good topics to avoid list, though I would have to exclude scutum shape and size, this is a time period issue for one and our knowledge is somewhat fragmentary. Construction details, such as the amount of curvature, facing material, edging material, bracing, shape of the handle, size of the boss, all makes for a good debate. We have to keep in mind that most of us are copying a single exemplar.

Ha! Pretty good list! But you should list some "Roman small talk" that we can fall back on. And having let the "Ludus Milites" cat out of the bag, now you're goint to tell us not to argue like crazy about it? Good luck with that!

Actually, on a slightly more serious note, the "tunic wars" were only notorious because of one person's inability to be civil and polite. The rest of us can debate the topic for quite a while without bad arguments.

But the drill debate is going to be a hot one! Just sayin...

You are right Matt; it is often just one or two who fail to step back and reflect before jumping up and down and screaming about their position. No one is going to die or get sent to the galleys over getting the drill commands perfect. Debate is fine and desirable but name calling and nasty remarks are best left to the professionals in politics.
If you have stress about this stuff it''s no longer a fun hobby and you could better spend your time running for public office where you will be in like company.

Yes that one is sometimes a hot potato with some saying no mercy, no prisoners, no compromise rather than do the best you can and seek to improve as you are able.
I prefer education to condemnation any day.

But yes you are right, some topics will forever be debated, but as Matt Amt said, the only time there has been a major flare of tempers was due to one person. That one person unfortunately caused a lot of grief, but was handily taken care of by the mod staff. In fact, there is usually some good that comes from such issues, and that is it allows the Mod staff to be able to more readily identify problems and act accordingly, and quicker. You rarely, if ever see people insulting others without a mod stepping in to rectify the issue, unlike other places. But then, I honestly think the caliber of member on RAT is in the top echelons, which makes our jobs easier.

Since those days, there has only been the occasional swamp that gets stepped in, but that also gets dealt with. :twisted:

Actually, if one thinks about it, there are NO topics to avoid in reenacting...just people who need to be controlled. Makes this thread title a bit misleading.

If you think that Roman re-enacting is tough then take all the above mentioned points substitute scutun for aspis and add:

Crest types, linothorax/leather armor and Beotian shield

Controversial emblems (What do you mean the Corinthians had a swastix you nazi? :twisted: )

Interpretation of the CORRECT commands (native speakers are ready to murder you on this :twisted: )

Pronounciation (No you "bad word", you must pronounce like the ancients :evil: )
You can cause double irritation by asking Doric or Ionic with the third party screaming about Aeolic hock:
