Hello All,
I took it upon myself to reconstruct a Chlamys from Sumners Roman Military clothing book. It took approx 4 metres of wool/silk mix material for the main body of the cloak and further linen - authentically madder dyed for the tablion decoration as per pictoral evidence from both Ravenna and the stilicho diptych..
It is for sale in the Marketplace section, bt I'd just like to mention that for reconstructive purposes, it took approx 25 hours of labour to construct the piece properly - thats without weaving the material myself. It was a good exercise in considering how long it would take for such peices to be completed during the 4th/5th century. Considering I am proficient in hand stitching - it represents what was quite probably a very expensive garment, most likely out of the reach of many of the lower ranked officers of the day.
Here is a link to the photos of the Chlamys..

It is worn by folding it lengthways along the edge of the tablion - so these form the open edge of the garment. tablions are off centre for this purpose
The dimensions are 3.8m long by 1.7m wide - you can see the whole cloak unfolded - its bigger than my three seater sofa throw !!
