Yes Yorkshire is slowly defrosting, so hopefully it will be back to the horses soon. They will be fat and scruffy but hopefully will remember what it is they are doing! :roll:

I love your enthusiasm D
And now like Cesar, and unlike other European groups, you will have a variety of good wooden framed saddles to display.  Not McCellan American Civil War saddles, not pad saddes , not "pretend" Roman saddles or even cowboy saddles with bits stuck on. But good solid Roman saddles. You have a great 2011 to look forward to!
Here the sand school is no longer frozen, it is flooded :roll: But come February we will be riding and practicising hard. I believe this year wil be a good one for us. I can see horse and rider combinations coming together, and people riding better than last year. I want to start making specific Roman bridles for each horse, and intend to spend the spring riding and BBQ'ing down the yard as much as possible.

Thanks. It was quite a good day. It rained, but I had the luck my former girlfriends horses are located at stables with an indoor ridingschool.
So, we started with trying to fit the saddle to the horse. Luckily for us it did fit and we could give it a try.
I used the Connolly type today So, enjoy some pictures.

It was very good to be back in Roman saddle. I've been riding in English and spanisch saddles since I was in York last summer, but the Roman 4-horned saddle beats all. No stupid stirrups. Unfortunatelly within the riding school I had to wear a modern riding cap.

Although it didn't totally fit to the rest of the Late Roman kit I was wearing today, we also took some pictures with my 1st Century Batavian Cavalry helmet with facemask from the Kops Plateau. (raw bowl, the work on the horse hair cover is still in progress).

Still some work to do on the saddle cloth (holes for the girthstraps have to be added) but I think it looks rather nice. Fringe is handmade

Excellent! I am really happy for you. You have the kit, the horses and the enthusiasm. Everything else is just a matter of time. I really do feel the will and passion to do this is the most important part of the project. Now you have the saddles as well, and you are going to have a great year. In York it is still snowing :evil:
I also like the late Roman kit, when the army and cavalry are at their best.
