Artillery question
#1
Probably a simple question, but why are they called Kata-peltes and not Kat-aspides?

A Spartan, being asked a question, answered "No." And when the questioner said, "You lie," the Spartan said, "You see, then, that it is stupid of you to ask questions to which you already know the answer!"

Big Grin It gets more complicated, as the weapon perhaps started life as a "katapeltikon", rather than a "katapaltes". I believe that a peltê can be a shooting target. But, in any case, the word is more likely related to the verb pallô, to throw, + kata, downwards or against. Allegedly. So, a machine for throwing arrows down from a vantage point?
