Berserks: A History of Indo-European "Mad Warriors"

I didn't say you were a big fan, I said you were a 'BIG' fan, in tones redolent and dripping with sarcasm that somehow seems to have gotten lost between my fingers and the screen.

Apologies if you think I misrepresented you. Certainly wasn't my intention.

We're not allowed to do that, here -- it's seen as discrimination against the grammatically challenged. Confusedhock: Just one more sign of the erosion of the once-great Scottish education system!

Quote:Now since I cannot find a single critical evaluation of this article, nor did the teacher supply one I find hsi arguement to be nothing more than an "I am the teacher you will do as I say" attitude.

Next time, ask on this forum and cite our replies. Then if your "Professor" feels your statements are insufficiently supported he can come on here and argue against it. That would be fun to watch.

The strength of an arguement is assessed by what is said, not by who says it. Peer review is simply a way of saving fellows like your professor from having to actually judge an arguement for themselves. This is not a bad thing, since we cannot all be specialists, but a lack of peer review does not indicate a weak arguement.

A Spartan, being asked a question, answered "No." And when the questioner said, "You lie," the Spartan said, "You see, then, that it is stupid of you to ask questions to which you already know the answer!"

We ran into Timohty's professor over on this thread. i'm not sure he would relish an online debate he seems to have sidesteped this one: http://antoninuspius.blogspot.com (which i posted before, but i think its funny).

That's funny, I did not realize it was the same guy. I would not want to step into that other thread either- those guys are visciously well informed! He should though, if he could make a good showing I'd be interested in his book.

That thread was not too much a comment on the Professor, more on the Hoplite issue. The professor used the more modern term and Ferrill used the older term. Made me wonder when the change happened, if it really did, etc.

Hmmm, that's not the message you should have gotten from that thread. If anything it is the use of "hoplon" for shield that is passe. Most modern scholars recognize that "aspis,' specifically "argive aspis" is much more common and specific.

Sorry I typed poorly. I was merely stating what my goal was when I first posted the thread. Having read everything posted to date I understand its a much more complex topic having to do with how specific you are being, what kind of sources a writer uses, as well as what is the commonly accepted interpretation of the time.

As is always the case, when you go back 2300 plus years nothing is ever simple.

My apologies to our Medical Man -- I rather hastily and testily -- (just got back from four days at Sutton Hoo - too much alcohol - little sleep - also trying to get ready to go to France the next morning) -- replied to his mention of my opinion of Herr Spiedel's book. I failed to recognise he was referring to a much earlier conversation that we had had and that his post was full of irony.

Just got back from France went up about 12,000 feet of Mont Blanc by cable car - awesome!!!!
