Lionel Casson (1914-2009)
#1
Lionel Casson, ancient maritime expert, has died at the amazing age of 94 (a week short of his 95th birthday). Best known, I think, for his Travel in the Ancient World (1974; 2nd edn 1994), he was still working well into his eighties, publishing Libraries in the Ancient World in 2001. His contribution to ancient studies was recognised in 2005 with the award of the Gold Medal for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement by the Archaeological Institute of America.

New York Times obituary: here.
(And the guys at Wikipedia beat me to it.)

Damn. I just bought Travel in the Ancient World today.
Nullis in verba

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.
