Making my own tent

When I saw Rusty's topic about "staining your tent brown", I sure would like to have a tent like that.
I just had to make a tent and spray it, thats it :roll:

After some drawing I had a tent (on paper), 2x3 meter, wall hight 1 meter, top hight 2,2 meter.
The 600gr/m² canvas was very stiff.
Punched out fifty leather rounds and glued them on the canvas with rubber cement.

It's easy to sew them when they are glued on.
With the pivoting feeding foot you don't have to turn the canvas and that's a big advantage

4 plies is no problem for this machine

Well, the tent is already finished but I didn't had the time until now to post it :oops:

I was at school the time I made the tent so I asked my instructor if I could use the spray-cabine to paint my tent.
He said: sure, go ahead you have the certification.
He was hock: next day when he looked in to the cabine, he thought I was pulling his leg the day before :mrgreen:

Only one wall to go!
It sucks up a lot of paint but the inside stays white.

It took me two hours 4 liters of paint/4 liters water for the outside.
I want to decorate the inside, just like the houses of Pompei...later.

Dried it overnight.
Its still a little bit stiff and very coarse.

Have to pack now and leave for the event at Azincourt.

One question though, why did you make your tent so narrow? The interior dimensions of the Vindolanda tent is 10 feet wide by 9 feet long.

I would like to make some more tents but the sewing machine is in the living room and the wife went ballistic when I entered the living room
with 25 meters of canvas

I make shoes and other(small) leather items, no tents.

I know, as a shoemaker I didn't want to make a military tent.
I work outside so 2x3 Meter would be enough for me alone, would like to dress it like a bed room.

I know this may sound just a little off topic and I have to admit that I have never made a tent, but what would all you tent experts think about the idea that the Romans might only have had 3 poles for their tents.
That is the 2 uprights with forked ends and a long fore and aft center bar with the sides being supported by the 8 soldiers kit poles supporting the side walls, it's just a thought I've had about this idea for some time now.
Infact I even think that the center pole would never need to be removed from the canvas, for when the guys pull out their kit poles from the sides after packing their own kit they would just take out the 2 end fork poles roll up the whole thing and put it onto the mule march another 10 or 20 miles and do it all over again before sunset.

I can't think of any groups that might have tried this any thoughts about it ?
