How to estimate the need for scales in a squamata ?
#1
Hi everybody !

A few times ago I proposed this equation to estimate the number of scales needed to assembly a lorica squamata without being short so I seeked for a slight excess method. Now I begin to think about it because I'd like to do it myself next year or the year after if I have to buy a secondary weapon (spatha). What do you think about the idea ? Does it seem correct to you ?

N being the number of scale needed. When I will really order my scales, I will probably multiplicate N per 1.05 or 1.1.
p is the body (fitted with thoracomachus) chest circumference.
h is the length under the shoulders.

Basically I work with metric units but it doesn't matter here.
Thanks

Ave Fratres,

I have one of our craftsmen making a Lorica Squamata now. To estimate the number of scales we simply assumed that our subject was composed of rectangular planes, We calculated the area for each and divided by our scale dimensions and rounded that total up. The idea was to have enough scales to finish the project, cover production wastage from the die and enough extra scales for future repair, public demonstrations etc.

I think your method will give a more exact number.

Hope to post some pictures of our finished product in the next month or so.....

Ok, thank you Arminius I forgot the repairs.

To sew the scales I was hinking about copper thread. What do you think about such a solution ?

Thanks
